How to Validate a SaaS Idea Before Writing a Single Line of Code

Most SaaS startups don't die because of a bug or a shaky architecture. They die because nobody ever wanted to pay for the product. Before investing weeks of development time, there's a simple way to test real demand in two weeks or less.

Step 1: Talk to 15 potential customers, not your friends

Your friends and family will always tell you your idea is great. What matters is the reaction of 15 to 20 people who match your exact target customer. Ask open-ended questions about their current problems, not about your solution — let them describe their pain before you mention what you're building.

Step 2: Build a landing page, not a product

A landing page that clearly explains the value proposition, with a waitlist sign-up or a pre-order offer, is enough to measure real interest. Drive targeted traffic (LinkedIn Ads, relevant Slack or Reddit communities) and watch the conversion rate.

  • Visitor-to-waitlist-signup conversion rate
  • Number of pre-orders or deposits collected
  • Quality of qualitative feedback received by email
  • Open rate if you send a follow-up email sequence

Step 3: Set a decision threshold before you launch the test

Decide in advance what number would justify moving forward — for example, 50 qualified sign-ups or 5 paid pre-orders in two weeks. Without a threshold set ahead of time, it's too easy to convince yourself after the fact that any result is encouraging.

Conclusion: Coding is the last step, not the first

Once demand is validated, development becomes a calculated investment rather than a bet. This is exactly the approach we follow during our Product Discovery workshops before every SaaS project.
